APSU's spot won the Grand Gold Award during the Advancement Awards Program. There is only one Grand Gold Award presented, and it is chosen from all the Gold Award winners in the five video categories.

Designed to appeal to non-traditional students, the spot was produced by Dye Van Mol and Lawrence, a Nashville advertising agency, in collaboration with the APSU Office of Public Relations and Marketing.

Titled “Graduation Card,” the spot ends with an unexpected twist. Chuck Denney, Knoxville, judging coordinator for the Video PSAs and Commercial Spots category, wrote, “What a great spot …surprising and emotional. It was a lump-in-the-throat kind of moment.”

At the same conference, APSU also received a Special Merit Award for an interactive CD-ROM viewbook. CASE District III includes all universities and colleges in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

According to the president of CASE District III, John Lippincott, there were more than 1,100 total entries in the 2003-04 competition.
