APSU trainer, graduate student to appear on “A Makeover Story”

If you think manicures arent manly and salons are for sissies, Matt Larson begs to differ.

The end result? Perfectly shaped eyebrows, a brilliant blonde mane and, best of all, a tearful yes from the woman of his dreams, Jill Birtchman.

The 23-year-old Austin Peay head strength coach recently underwent a complete television transformation courtesy of The Learning Channel's “A Makeover Story.”

The end result? Perfectly shaped eyebrows, a brilliant blonde mane and, best of all, a tearful “yes” from the woman of his dreams, Jill Birtchman.

“Before we were chosen for the show, I had planned to propose to Jill,” says Larson, who didn't let the crew in on the secret until they arrived in Evansville, Ind., for filming on Thursday, April 22. Proposing on national television made it even better.”

But before he could pop the question, Larson had to endure the antics of the new and improved “A Makeover Story.”

“A lot of ‘A Makeover Story' viewers will be surprised by the show's new format,” says the APSU graduate student, who was volunteered for the show by Birtchman. “The host, Moses, called all the shots and stayed with us the entire three days of filming.”

Forbidden to see themselves or make any decisions regarding their makeovers, Larson and Birtchman both were in for a surprise Saturday evening, when they attended her Alpha Omicron Pi sorority formal at the University of Evansville.

“Initially, I was shocked,” says Larson. “I went from dirty blonde hair to bleached blonde, and Jill went from long dark brown hair to shorter, dark red hair.”

Birtchman got her fair share of excitement as Larson knelt before her, ring in hand.

“She was totally shocked,” he says. “As soon as I started to get down on my knee, she started crying, but she did manage to say ‘yes'.”

Larson says the couple will exchange vows once Birtchman completes her graduate studies next year.

The makeover and proposal will air on TLC in September. No date has been set.
