APSU's first weekend degree program, the on-site M.S.M., which began in August 2004, has been a resounding success, with 50 students enrolled in the first class.

Unlike the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)the only other online graduate business degree offered by a Tennessee Board of Regents institutionthe M.S.M. is for anyone with a bachelor's degree in any fieldnot just businesswho meets graduate requirements.

Designed for working adults who want to advance in their career, the M.S.M. program contains a strong, integrated component of leadership education.

Dr. Bruce Speck, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs, said, “Students in the M.S.M. program understand leadership and organizational dynamics. They learn how to solve problems, build an efficient and motivated work force, understand and interpret financial documents and conduct solid research as the basis of data-driven decisions.”

To further enhance the conveniences of the program, with the launch of the new online M.S.M., students will be able to earn the M.S.M. via three venues--online, on campus or a combination.

Additionally, according to Dr. William Rayburn, director of the School of Business, students may complete the program in as little as a year.

What differentiates Austin Peay's M.S.M. from the typical online M.B.A. program?

“Our program focuses on leadership within any career field,” Rayburn says. “Our creative, enthusiastic online faculty brings unique strengths and real-world experience to their classes.”

As an example, Rayburn points to former dean of the College of Business and professor of marketing, Dr. Carmen Reagan, who will teach “Corporate Citizenship” in the online M.S.M. Among her community leadership posts, Reagan is chair of both the Clarksville-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and the Gateway Medical Center Board of Directors.

Rayburn also points out that the online M.S.M. works well for APSU's own baccalaureate business graduates who want to begin their careers while continuing graduate studies to enhance their potential for accelerated career advancement.
