About the MPS

The Austin Peay State University College of Graduate Studies and The College of Behavioral and Health Sciences offer the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) with a concentration in Strategic Leadership.

PURPOSE (Goals and Objectives)

The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) is an interdisciplinary graduate degree program in the social sciences. The 33-hour program is designed for working adults who wish to pursue graduate professional studies in an online learning environment.

The MPS is a professionally-oriented program that respond to the dynamic needs of students working in or preparing for rapidly changing professional environments and expectations. In this program of interdisciplinary graduate studies, students make connections between various professional fields and traditional social science disciplines.

Professionals that might be served by the MPS program include, but are not limited to, individuals working in commerce, information technology, mass media, government, social services, health care and education.


The proposed program requires completion of 33 semester credit hours (11 courses) distributed as follows:

Core Courses

  • PTMA 5100 Professional Environment: Issues and Ethics (3)
  • PTMA 5200 Globalization and the Professions (3)
  • PTMA 5300 Research Methods (3)

Concentration for Strategic Leadership

Students will complete seven of the following courses. 

Leadership Theory

  • LDSP 5000 Foundations of Leadership (3)  *Or other approved elective
  • LDSP 5500 Current Issues and Cases in Leadership (3)
  • PTMA 5560 Small Group Leadership (3)

Organizational Structure and Change

  • PTMA 5800 Organizational Skills and Development (3)  *Or other approved elective


  • PTMA 5110 Leadership and Communication (3)
  • PTMA 5700 Conflict Management and Negotiation (3)

Strategic Planning and Assessment

  • PTMA 5105 Project Planning and Scheduling (3)
  • PTMA 5998 Professional Project (3)  *Or other approved elective
