Admission for First-Time Freshmen

This information applies to you if you’re under age 21,
you’re not in the military and you never have attended
a school beyond high school.

Applying for Admission

• Complete and submit an application online or download our PDF application and mail it to the Office of Admissions.
• Pay your one-time, non-refundable $15 application fee online, through the mail, or in person at the Browning Administration Building, if completing a paper application.  Checks should be made out to APSU.  Application fees are paid online when completing an online admissions application.

• Have the ACT/SAT center or your guidance counselor submit your official ACT or SAT/SAT 1 scores to our Office of Admissions.  Scores are valid for three years from the date you take the test. When you take the ACT or SAT, there is a space on the exam where you can indicate you want your scores sent to APSU.   For the ACT, enter code 03944.  For the SAT/SAT 1, enter 1028.

• Ask your high school guidance counselor or GED test center staff person to send an official copy of your academic transcripts to our Office of Admissions.  If you’re a graduate of a Tennessee public high school, your transcripts must include a notation indicating you’ve passed the Tennessee High School Proficiency Examination.  We cannot accept hand-delivered transcripts, special education diplomas or high school certificates.  Click here to print a Transcript Request Form you can mail to your former school(s).

• Application Deadline -- All required information must be received prior to admission, evaluation of transfer credit and registration.

Admission Requirements for First-Time Freshmen

There are two kinds of admission to APSU: unconditional and conditional. If you meet our criteria for unconditional admission, you will be fully admitted to the University based on your proven academic ability.
 

Criteria for Unconditional Admission

If you will be under age 21 at the time of enrollment…

To be fully admitted to APSU, you must have ONE of the following:

• An ACT score of 20 or higher

• A SAT score of 940 or higher

• A high school GPA of 2.85 or higher on a 4.0 scale

• A GED score of 450 or higher with a “passing” notation

AND ONE of the following:

• Met the high school course requirements

• An ACT score of 26 or higher

• An SAT score of 1170 or higher

AND ONE of the following:

• No more than one ACT subscore of 18 or less in English or math

• No more than one SAT subscore of 460 or less in critical reading and math

If you will be age 21 or older at the time of enrollment…

To be fully admitted to APSU, you must

• Provide academic transcripts that prove you graduated high school OR prove you earned a GED average score of 450 with a passing notation.  (If you earned a GED before January 2002, you must have an average score of 45.)

AND

• Complete the COMPASS assessment, earning no more than one subscore that requires enrollment in an enhanced core English or mathematics class.

Criteria for Conditional Admission

If you will be under age 21 at the time of enrollment…

To be conditionally admitted to APSU, you must have

• Met the high school course requirements

AND ONE of the following:

• An ACT score of 19 or higher

• A SAT score of 900 or higher

• A high school GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale

• A GED score of 450 with a “passing” notation

AND ONE of the following

• More than one ACT subscore of 18 or lower in English or math

• More than one Sat subscore of 460 or lower in critical reading and math

If you will be age 21 or older at the time of enrollment…

You will be conditionally admitted to APSU if you

• Provide academic transcripts that prove you graduated high school OR prove you earned a GED average score of 450 with a passing notation.  (If you earned a GED before January 2002, you must have an average score of 45.)

AND

• Complete the COMPASS assessment, earning scores that require you to take two or more enhanced courses.

If you are conditionally admitted to APSU, these restrictions will apply to you during your first semester:

• You will be on academic probation.

• You may take no more than 13 credit-hours (roughly four classes). 

• You must earn at least a 1.5 GPA.

• You must take part in academic activities meant to help you succeed.

• You must register for classes prior to late registration.  No student who is conditionally admitted to Austin Peay State University will be permitted to late register.

If you do not earn a GPA of at least 1.5 during your first semester, you will be suspended for one full semester.

Housing Requirement for Freshmen

Better grades and more social opportunities are just a couple of the benefits of living on campus.  With this in mind, we require all full-time, single freshmen under the age of 21 to live on campus for their first two semesters UNLESS they are living with a parent or guardian who resides within 50 miles of campus.  You must either apply for housing or submit a residency exemption form.
