Configuring Serv-U for FTP from APSU02 Accounts

The setup program is located on \\CSSERVER2\CSTech\E-Term32\ftpservu on the network.

Double-click “Setup.exe” and follow the instructions to install

Configuring Your Serv-U Server
Serv-U essentially turns your PC into an FTP Server.  You can then connect to your PC from APSU02, and transfer files to your local hard drive.  The first thing you have to do is to configure your Serv-U software to give you access to the computer.  Then you will need to find your IP Address, and connect to your machine from the APSU02.

Step 1- Adding Yourself As a User

  1. Open your Serv-U software by selecting it from the Start>>Programs Menu.
  2. The first time you open it, a screen appears with two choices.  Select choice 1.
  3. You will need to register the product.  Contact the Help Desk to obtain the product key, and then follow these next three steps to register Serv-U.
  4. Select “Register Serv-U” under the “Help” Menu.
  5. Click “Enter Key” in the Register Serv-U dialog.
  6. When you click “OK”, you will get a message that says Serv-U found a registration key.  When you click “OK” in that message box, Serv-U will automatically close.
  7. Re-Open your Serv-U software by selecting it from the Start>>Programs Menu.
  8. If the Serv-U window does not come up, then a green U should appear on your taskbar.  Double-click it.
  9. The Serv-U window should open.
  10. If your Serv-U screen does not come up, then a green U should appear on your taskbar. Double-click it.
  11. The Serv-U window should open.
  12. Select Setup>>Users from the menu in the Serv-U window.
  13. Click the “New” button in the “Setup Users’ window.
  14. Type a username.  Since you will use this name to log onto Serv-U, it might be good to use your APSU02 Username.
  15. Click “OK”.
  16. Enter a password for yourself.  This can be anything.
NOTE: Your password will appear in the text box as you type it, but after your server is set up, it will appear as encrypted.
  17. The Home Directory should be “C:\”.
  18. Now, you need to give yourself permissions to do things on your machine.
Click the “Add” button in the frame entitled “File/Directory access rules”.
  19. A box appears prompting for the “Path Name”. Type “C:\” and hit ‘OK”.
  20. Now, with the “C:\” highlighted in the access rules frame, check all of the boxes to the right, giving full permissions.
  21. Click “Store” to store your user information.
  22. Note that there are two users in the user list now. The “** Default **” one is extraneous.  Click on it in the list to the left. Then click “Delete” to get rid of it. When it asks, “Are you sure…” click “OK”.
  23. Click “OK” in the lower right hand corner of the “Setup Users” window.
  24. Congratulations!  You are now properly configured.

Step 2-Find your IP Address

  1. Click “Start” and then “Run” on your taskbar.
  2. In the ‘Run” dialog box, type “winipcfg”
  3. A dialog should appear with your network connection information.
  4. Your IP address is listed in this dialog, write it down for future use.
  5. Close this dialog without making any changes.

Step 3- Connecting to your Machine from APSU02

  1. Start the Serv-U application on your machine.
  2. Log into APSU02.
  3. From the menu, type “FTP”
  4. At the ftp> prompt, type  “c IP address” where IP address is your IP address, found in step 2 above.
  5. You will be prompted for the username and password you entered for yourself in step 1 above.
  6. Hopefully, you will see a message similar to this: “<User logged in, proceed”.   If not, type exit, and try again.  Be sure to use the correct username and password.

For help using FTP, you can view the help files in the APSU02 FTP utility by typing “help” at the FTP prompt.
